Worse Than Murder: A Trip Down Mystery Lane

One of my short stories is featured in this month’s issue of the online WELL READ Magazine. Thank you, editor Mandy Haynes, for including me!

Worse Than Murder is a story I wrote some years ago. In slightly different form, it took Honorable Mention out of many entries in Writer’s Digest’s annual writing competition, but hasn’t been published until now.

You can access it on page 79 in WELL READ.

Just click the link here.

I hope you enjoy it.

It’s a little taste of the time I spent in the Deep South many years ago, seersucker suits and all.

And while you’re at it, subscribe to WELL READ and never miss an issue. Each month features a great collection of writers with a distinctly Southern bent.

In the August 2025 issue, Mandy writes:

“A big congratulations to Mike Coleman, Micah Ward, Jeff Clemmons, LaVern Spencer McCarthy, J. B. Hogan, Fhen M., and Ken Gosse for their fantastic submissions! WELL DONE!”

I am grateful to be in their company!

Note: I took the photo at the top of this post on a visit last year to Montgomery, Alabama. It’s a partial view of one of the apartment houses that are common in that city, an apartment much like the one where I imagine my story takes place. The bloody effect is my own addition. 🙂
