The Numbers Don’t Lie

One goal of our trip to Spain is to sleep better than we had after a certain date in November 2024. According to my Garmin watch’s summary for the second week of our visit, significant gains were achieved.

The summary shows big changes especially in the REM and Deep Sleep categories, which are often far below the 60-minute mark. Need I say more?

I started to elaborate on the likely reasons: smaller bytes of news, healthful food, more active days, the warm welcome by locals and other new arrivals. Plus, the cool, often rainy nights in Alicante are excellent sleep inducers and sustainers.

But I know there are deeper reasons. And I know you know what they are.

That’s why I’m going to end this blog right here, with a quote from Theodore Roethke’s soothing 1953 poem, The Waking.

“Great Nature has another thing to do

To you and me; so take the lively air,

And, lovely, learn by going where to go.

This shaking keeps me steady. I should know.

What falls away is always. And is near.

I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.

I learn by going where I have to go.”
